In the name of Allah the Most Beneficent the Most Merciful,
“And there followed them successors who inherited the Scripture [while] taking the commodities of this lower life and saying, “It will be forgiven for us.” And if an offer like it comes to them, they will [again] take it. Was not the covenant of the Scripture taken from them that they would not say about Allah except the truth, and they studied what was in it? And the home of the Hereafter is better for those who fear Allah, so will you not use reason?”
Dear reader our Lord Most High informs that after the generation from the Children of Israel that was made up of righteous people came another generation that was not righteous. They inherited the Torah and studied it.They would grab the transitory things of this world even if it was haram(forbidden) claiming they would be forgiven for it and even if an opportunity presented itself to fall into sin they would grab unto it.This is despite the fact that a covenant was taken from them (the children of Israel) that they would speak about Allah only the truth.Furthermore no mention of unconditional salvation of anyone is stated in the Torah.
Despite their knowledge of the Torah and the covenant they made with Allah and the book they inherited i.e the Torah they gave preference to the dunya(this worldly life) and its transitory pleasures rather than the hereafter.
Allah ends this verse and says the hereafter is better for the Mutaqqin will we not reason? Thus encouraging us to seek Allahs’ tremendous reward.
This life will end.The next life is eternal. However that eternity is not blissful for all of us.Its only better for those who are Mutaqqin (those who fulfill the Commands and abstain from the prohibitions)
Thus the reward of Allah and what is with Him is better for those who avoid prohibitions, curtail their lusts and become active in the obedience of their Lord. The akhirah(the hereafter) is for those who do good and not a select race despite their wrongdoing.
Any reasonable person would choose temporary difficulty followed by eternal bliss rather than temporary pleasure followed by eternal torment.
Dear reader one of the important lessons derived from this verse is not to take the forgiveness of Allah for granted. We should neither despair of Allahs’ Mercy nor have false assumptions regarding the fact that Allah is Forgiving. We should strive to strike a balance between hope and fear.
Dear reader reason and know that indeed the hereafter is better for the people who fulfill the commands and abstain from the prohibitions of Allah.Strive to be among them.Strive for the hereafter.Strive for Jannah(Paradise)
and Allah knows best.
Asalaam aleykum warahmatullahi wabarakatuh(May the peace and Mercy and Blessings of Allah be upon you)
