Milk & Wine

In the name of Allah the Most Beneficent the Most Merciful,

Quran 16-66-67

“And indeed, for you in cattle is a lesson. We give you drink from what is in their bellies – between excretion and blood – pure milk, palatable to drinkers. And from the fruits of the palm trees and grapevines you take intoxicant and good provision. Indeed in that is a sign for a people who reason.”

Dear reader, our Kind Lord tells us that in cattle i.e camels, cows, sheep etc there is a sign, evidence and lesson.Allah turns our attention to the amazing process of milk formation.Cattle eat fodder that is digested and in turn from it milk is produced.Blood, milk and excrement all follow their respective systems(Circulatory, digestive and excretory system) such that they do not mix and each is unique and different in its own way.The milk is thus palatable to the drinkers completely untainted.

It is established in the Prophetic narrations that he peace be upon him said whomever Allah has given milk to drink should say,

“oh Allah bless us in it and give us more of it”(Found in the At-Tirmithi one of the 6 books of Prophetic narrations)

When Allah mentions the blessing of milk He follows it with reference to drinks people make from the fruits of the date palms and grapevines i.e strong drinks before they were forbidden.(In the early stages of the Prophet Muhammads’ Message in Mecca alcohol was allowed but forbidden later in Medina due to our Lords’ Absolute Wisdom. He knows best what to allow and forbid His servants and when.)

Ibn Abbas (a famous first generation Quranic exegete) said: Strong drink is the product of these two fruits i.e dates & grapes and the good provision is what is permitted of them i.e the fruits when they are dried like dates or products derived from them such as vinegar before the become intoxicating.

Allah ends the 2nd ayah by stating this are signs for people who reason.Reason is mentioned (and Allah knows best) as its the noblest feature of mankind.Hence it maybe one of the reasons our Wise Lord forbade intoxicants is in order to protect ones’ ability to reason.

I would like to end this post by reminding myself and you dear reader that in paradise there are rivers of milk and rivers of wine.Really?Yes,really.Allah our Lord tells us:

“A similitude of the Garden which those who keep their duty (to Allah) are promised: Therein are rivers of water unpolluted, and rivers of milk whereof the flavor does not change, and rivers of wine delicious to the drinkers, and rivers of clear-run honey; therein for them is every kind of fruit, with pardon from their Lord. (Are those who enjoy all this) like those who are immortal in the Fire and are given boiling water to drink so that it tears their bowels? “The Noble Quran 47:15

Thus dear reader lets strive to attain taqwa(avoid the prohibitions and carry our the commandments of Allah) so that we by the Mercy of our Merciful Lord get to dwell forever in paradise.

Observation:

  • Allah is putting forth an example for us of how something pure can come from something impure.

and Allah knows best.

Asalaam aleykum warahmatullahi wabarakatuh(May peace and the Mercy and Blessings of Allah be upon you)
